• Always water your plants in the cool of the evening or very early morning. If you water your plants during the heat of the day, there’s a good chance a lot of it will evaporate before it reaches the plant roots.

• The part of the plant that needs water is the roots, so water the soil, not the leaves.

• In hot weather, give each plant a good soaking every 2–3 days, rather than a quick watering every day.

• If you have to prioritise, water plants that need it the most (i.e., pots, hanging baskets, shallow-rooted plants – such as bedding and young vegetables – and new plants that don’t yet have a well-established root system).

• Help feed water to the roots of thirsty plants by sinking a flower pot into the soil alongside the plant. This will channel water down into the soil.

• Choose large containers for your plants as these won’t dry out as quickly as small ones. Add water-retaining granules to the compost in pots and hanging baskets.

• To save money, use rainwater collected in a water butt. You can also use waste water from washing up and the water from baths and showers. Avoid using water that contains bleach or strong household cleaning products, as this could damage the plants.
