Tulipa ‘Queen of Night’

Named in 1944, this classic dark purple tulip is as popular now as it has ever been. The flowers may not be large but they are still among the darkest you will find and they have an elegant sophistication rarely matched by more modern cultivars. The stems are tall and hold egg-shaped buds that begin pale matt purple but soon develop their deep, rich aubergine purple colouring, with a dusting of dark purple bloom on the outside to give a texture of satin to the petals. The leaves are grey-green and make a great backdrop to a group of the neat, compact, dusky flowers. Don’t be distracted by the new kids on the block; this old cultivar is tulip royalty and it still has a lot to give.
