Phedimus kamtschaticus var. floriferus ‘Weihenstephaner Gold’
Russian stonecrop SYNONYM Sedum kamtschaticum var. floriferum ‘Weihenstephaner Gold’, S. floriferus ‘Weihenstephaner Gold’
One of the best sedums in many regards! Slender, dark green foliage and strongly notched tips are the first clue in identifying this plant. From there, these floriferous plants have extra-branched red stems terminating in golden yellow flowers beginning in early summer. As the flowers fade, the seedheads develop some red tones, which give an appealing red and yellow bicolor effect. And finally, the beet-red foliage in winter sets this one apart from any imposters. Easy to propagate by cuttings.
ZONES 3–9
PLANT SIZE 5–8 inches (13–20 cm) tall, 5–6 inches (13–15 cm) across.
SOIL dry to well-drained, average; prefers summer moisture
LIGHT full sun to part shade
SIMILAR SPECIES AND CULTIVARS Phedimus hybridus ‘Czar’s Gold’, which is grown from seed, does not have the same quality red winter coloration, but otherwise is quite similar. Leaves are slightly wider, more like P. kamtschaticus. Phedimus middendorffianus var. diffusus also resembles this form, but is not evergreen. Phedimus sichotensis also has similarities.
ORIGIN garden origin
LANDSCAPE AND DESIGN USES An outstanding plant, suitable as a groundcover, on greenroofs, and in containers. This is always my first recommendation if someone is looking for a low-growing groundcover. The true evergreen nature of this plant makes it foolproof. It will keep out weeds and the red winter color is great.
