Salvia koyamae
Japanese yellow sage
Chosen more for its foliage effect in the garden than its flowers, Japanese yellow sage boasts large, pale yellow-green leaves. Each leaf is almost 6 inches (15 cm) long and nearly as wide. The decumbent stems lay on the ground or on nearby plants, creating a soft textural weave through the garden. The flowers, while not showy, are a very pretty soft yellow.
TYPE, HABIT, AND SIZE A half-hardy perennial 2 feet (0.6 m) tall and slowly spreading to 4–6 feet (1.2–1.8 m) across.
HARDINESS Zone 8b
ORIGIN Japan
CULTIVATION Grow in good soil with humus added, regular irrigation, and partial shade. Trim off old flowers to keep the focus on the attractive foliage.
LANDSCAPE USE Plant in a shady perennial border, woodland garden, or the foreground of shrubs.
