Donât tidy up too soon. I leave the stems until just before bulbs start to emerge.
This apple is free standing and its lower branches were traind downÂwards to get it to fruit lower, meaning it can be pruned to stay small
Pruning fruit trees and bushes
The scope of this book doesnât allow me to cover all pruning techniques you may need to know to maintain your forest garden. I would recommend reading a few books dedicated to fruit pruning, watching some videos, then finding a course or a forest garden or community orchard where you can have a go; this is the best way to learn. If you donât have the time or inclination to learn in this much detail, I hope the information here will mean your attempts are more informed, so less errors occur whilst you are giving it a go. In reality the dwarf fruit trees are nowhere near as vigorous as commercial orchard trees, so will likely require very little pruning other than to remove dead, diseased or dying branches. More technical pruning is required if you decide to wall-train fruit but even this is not complicated to maintain once you have achieved the basic framework during the first few years.
Knowing the basics and the reasons why we prune gives a really good grounding to then develop the technical skills. You are very unlikely to kill a tree from bad pruning. The worst you will do is reduce fruit yield for a few years and possibly end up with an oddly shaped plant.
