1. This is not to imply that the incorporation of words in visual works by other artists is any less sophisticated. From Barbara Kruger's inclusion of the printed word and Jenny Holzer's appropriation of the electronic word for sociopolitical criticism to Arakawa and Madeline Gins's use of writing to investigate "the mechanism of meaning," language is deployed in a variety of ways by contemporary artists. Though their interests and intentions are different, all of these artists share an appreciation for the visual significance of graphic designs. For helpful elaborations of this important issue, see W. J. T. Mitchell, "Word and Image," Critical Terms for Art History, ed. Robert S. Nelson and Richard Shiff (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996), pp. 47-57; W. J. T. Mitchell, Picture Theory: Essays on Verbal and Visual Representation (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1994); and Harrison, Essays on Art and Language. I have considered aspects of the relation between words and images in the work of Arakawa and Madeline Gins as well as David Salle in Nots, pp. 96-121; 166-211.
