How To Choose The Best Wedding Cake

You might not know much about wedding cakes besides the obvious fact that they're delicious, but the more informed you are, the better your decisions will be

Choosing the best wedding cake depends on your own likes and dislikes, the wedding theme, and your budget.

The wedding cake is one of the oldest wedding traditions in existence, so naturally there are tons of styles and designs to choose from. The traditional wedding cake is usually multi-tiered, frosted, with a cake topper and possibly some fondant flowers or other fun designs on it. If you’re more of a traditionalist, this would be a good design for you. Perhaps you would prefer square tiers instead of round tiers.

Maybe you like the idea of mini, individual servings instead of a large cake for everyone. If you want to shy away from tradition, there are many different desserts now being formed into wedding “cakes,” such as cupcakes, donuts, crepes, macarons and even cheese. Once you’ve decided what style of wedding cake you want, you’ll be ready to get started.

The most important rule to adhere to when choosing a wedding cake is to stay true to yourselves. Your wedding cake should reflect you as a couple and should fit in with the theme of the day. Don’t feel pressured to have a huge wedding cake if you’re only inviting 50 guests, otherwise you’ll be eating left-over wedding cake for weeks. Your cake needs to be size appropriate and it must suit you and your big day.

It will also help to look at photographs in magazines and books or online for inspiration. Think about the look and the flavour you desire to help narrow your focus.

Have you always wanted a pristine white cake? Or maybe you love strawberry filling. The ideas you find may help you come up with creative ways to incorporate your favourites so they fit your wedding.

Guests might forget your first dance song or the colour of your table runners, but your friends and family will always remember what your wedding cake tasted like — and looked like.

While it is ultimately up to you to choose the cake, the choice can be made a little easier by following these steps.

Figure out what style of cake you want Spend some time browsing pictures of wedding cakes to get an idea of what you like in terms of presentation. Do you want something extra-tall? The cake's design should match the aesthetic (dealing with the nature and beauty) of the day. A formal wedding generally calls for a structured, multitier cake; it can be elaborately or simply decorated, so long as its style implies something ceremonial and grand. These cakes are often round, but square or even hexagonal shapes are more unexpected -- and the tiers can be stacked for a solid look or set on pillars for an airy grace.

White is the classic colour for a wedding cake, but chocolate and tinted frostings can be just as elegant. For a less formal wedding, you can certainly embrace the unconventional.
