Damping Off

Damping off, also called collar canker or root rot, is caused by several species of Pythium and Phytophthora fungi that can survive in the soil for as long as 12 years and attack newly emerged seedlings of all kinds. This disease is most likely to appear when seeds take a long time to germinate, perhaps because they were planted too deeply or the soil is too cool, too heavy, or highly compacted. The fungi thrive in and are spread by water, especially where drainage is poor and/or plants are crowded.
