Silence, the Essential Condition for Thought II
You should make a constant effort to explore and become more conscious of your innate powers and possibilities and start to put them to good use. Heaven never leaves you entirely to your own resources; it always extends a helping hand, it always puts you on the right path and gives you new mines to exploit and new treasure-troves to draw on. And it is time you set to work, for when the day comes for you to leave for the next world, all the knowledge and virtues stored up in your soul and spirit will go with you, and you will bring them back again when you return for your next incarnation.1 Those who have never worked to acquire any spiritual qualities will go empty-handed into the next world. As we all know, we cannot take our cars or factories, clothes or jewellery with us when we leave this earth, and if we arrive naked and destitute in the next world because we have done nothing to acquire spiritual wealth while we were here, we need not expect to receive a very enthusiastic welcome. Yes, it is your own inner being that you must now learn to explore and exploit, for it contains all the most precious elements you need in order to soar and to realize your full potential.
This work can really be done only during your meditation, in silence. Once you have succeeded in driving away all the tiresome thoughts and feelings that keep cropping up and have reached a state of inner quietness and harmony, you must stay perfectly still without moving and try to suspend all thought. Let nothing stir in your mind â not a thought, not an image â as though everything had stopped functioning. Only your consciousness is awake and vigilant.
In reality, it is only the movements of your lower nature that stop functioning. Your higher nature, on the contrary, begins to vibrate and radiate so fast and with such intensity that it appears to be absolutely motionless. This is difficult to grasp, I know; you cannot really understand what I am saying. Intellectually, of course, you can understand a little but you will understand me fully only when you have actually achieved this experience.
Your higher self will not manifest itself until your lower self makes way for it2... and this is not so easy. Your lower self is not prepared to give ground without a struggle. It is always there, always gesticulating, shouting and throwing its weight about. This is why your higher self manifests itself so rarely: it has to wait until the lower self gives in from sheer exhaustion.
