Can it be that easy? Other than correcting a mistaken, and potentially anti-Semitic understanding of the Pharisees, it does not seem like much happened. How was the mind “teased into active thought?” It was—we just did not notice it. Recall the first question asked in this section:Which “good guy” are we supposed to be like, the good bad guy (tax collector) or the bad good guy (Pharisee)? How did you answer? Take your time, because it may be a trick question. To say, “I am like the Pharisee” is to say, “I stand fully sufficient before the Lord, and do not need to ask for a thing.”We haven’t met, but I am guessing that shoe doesn’t fit. To say, “I am like the tax collector” is to say, “I am a no-good, greedy s.o.b.,” but it is also to say, “I am the one who goes home ‘justified.’” That one is a little snug too, isn’t it? Just like Jesus to give us a story that calls into question even our answers.
