Supporting Their Auditory Channel

VKAs are easily influenced by what they are told about themselves. Make sure that your words and tone of voice support their positive self-esteem. What you say to them will go in very deeply. Whenever possible, criticism should be written, not spoken. Avoid using sarcasm with people of this pattern. Their auditory channel is very literal. They will take in the biting tone of voice and may not understand at all what you say.

It is vital for people whose minds work in this way to feel heard. Allow them time to speak; have patience with their spiraling words. Really listen and mirror back to them in words or in writing what they have said.

VKAs need to ask a lot of questions. You don't need to answer them. Instead, direct their attention back to themselves—their own words, experiences, or viewpoints. Allow time for silence and for pauses in the midst of conversations—do not finish their sentences, interrupt them, or put words in their mouths.

It is often more effective to ask them, “How do you feel about…?” rather than “What do you think about…?” It will help them stay more present to focus on feelings. Asking their opinion can cause them to space out. Pay attention to when VKAs eyes glaze over. You may be talking too fast, too intensely, or too abstractly.
