CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Cheyenne

Ridge hadn’t been kidding when he said Everly wanted a simple wedding. The ceremony was understated and beautiful, focusing on blessing the new union before their friends, family, and God.

The whole thing had Cheyenne sniffling back that tickling in her nose that said tears were near. She’d shed more silent tears over the last two weeks than in the last two years of her life.

It was the emotional struggle. That had to be it. She was stuck between a rock and a hard place with no one she could turn to. She couldn’t ask her sister, Sadie, Ava, or Everly for guidance when no one knew about the mess she’d gotten herself into. The Lord was her only confidant, and if He knew the answer to her problem, He hadn’t let her know about it yet.

After the ceremony, Ridge had stayed close to Cheyenne’s side, only leaving when he was called to be in some of the wedding photos. Within the first half hour, she’d officially been introduced to all of Ridge’s relatives and friends, and aside from the influx of introductions, she was having a great time.

Now, Cheyenne had somehow ended up in a never-ending conversation with Ridge’s grandma.

“I told him, ‘Don’t get muddy.’ I said those exact words. But did he listen?”

Cheyenne smiled. “I’m guessing he didn’t.”

“Of course not. In fact, he got my golf cart stuck in the stream! He knew I used that golf cart to get to my garden at the bottom of the hill every day, and he took it on a little joy ride and planted it in the muddy bank. Everly ran in covered in mud and crying. She told me what Ridge had done and that they couldn’t get the stupid golf cart out of the stream.”

Cheyenne glanced over to where Ridge was talking with his uncle Henry. In the few seconds she watched him, his gaze darted to hers no less than three times. “I bet he was a handful.”

“You have no idea. I still love that booger. He was always so sweet. I had some of the most beautiful flowers in my yard, and he’d pick one and bring it to me every once in a while. At first, I wanted to throttle him for picking my good blooms instead of the dead heads, but then I realized the kitchen was a little brighter whenever he brought one inside. You know, he did some of the sweetest things when he was little, but he never said a word about them. He’d hand me those flowers and run off without a backward glance.”

Cheyenne glanced at Ridge again, who was now making his way back toward her. “I know what you mean. He’s a quiet one.”

Ridge’s grandma patted Cheyenne’s shoulder. “His actions speak louder than words, and that’s okay.”

Ridge stepped up beside Cheyenne and wrapped an arm around her waist. “Granny, are you telling embarrassing stories again?”

“I don’t know what you mean,” Granny said with a stern expression. “I was just telling this young girl about the flowers you used to bring me.
