• Fencing and repellents

These alternatives are relatively costly and only applicable to specialized site situations. In general, repellents work best when changed frequently and where densities are relatively low. Where no other measures are in place, fencing, or exclosures (Figure 19.1), may be the only recourse to protect valuable landscape features. It is important, however, to remember that fencing only intensifies the problem somewhere else. Temporary protection can also be used to shield small new plantings, which are especially vulnerable to browsing. The most important role of exclosures is probably to protect rare and remnant indigenous populations. You can also use selective exclosures to minimize human exposure to Lyme-carrying ticks. As many as 83 percent fewer host-seeking nymphs and 90 percent fewer host-seeking larvae (Daniels, Fish, and Schwartz 1993; Stafford 1993) are possible under this method.
