A Crib or a Cage

Rainy afternoons were designed for cozy time indoors with the family, curled up around the fireplace, telling stories, laughing heartily as everyone sipped hot cocoa and listened to the rain pattering against the window. That was how Leanne had always imagined real families would act during a heavy downpour. Real families, with parents unlike hers, who didn't disappear for days at a time, leaving their nine year old daughter at home alone, fending for herself. She'd fantasized about this very thing when she was growing up, vowing that if she ever had a family of her own, that was exactly how they would spend their rainy afternoons...

'Make your own cocoa, Miss Evans. I'm not your servant!'

This was not what she had in mind.

'You're already in the kitchen making one for yourself and Dillon!'

Leanne and Dillon were in the living-room perusing a catalog that had arrived in the mail a few days earlier. It was from a mother and baby store, and was filled with page after page of baby furniture – some necessary, some unnecessary, but all severely overpriced. Leanne had no intention of buying anything from the catalog, but she and Dillon found the act of browsing it so exciting that they'd spent the past hour doing so while Melissa was in the shower. Now she was out and making hot cocoa, and being extremely difficult about it.

'What do you think of this one?' They were in the cribs section of the catalog. Leanne pointed to a plain metal construction. 'It's durable, it's easy to assemble, and it won't break the bank.'

Dillon grimaced. 'It looks like a cage.'

'We might need one of those. This baby's coming out of your mom – who knows what it will be!'

'I heard that!' Melissa said, as she entered the room, carrying a tray with three mugs on it. She set it down on the coffee table.

'You actually made one for me,' Leanne said, in amazement. 'Or is that second mug also for you? I know you'd make two for yourself and none for me, out of spite.'

Melissa ignored her and settled into her favorite armchair, sipping her steaming hot drink. At six months she had lost much of her swagger and agility, which she wasn't very happy about. But even in maternity wear she still managed to pull off sexy. She hadn't gained a lot of weight all over – it was pretty much just her stomach that had expanded. And her bosom, of course. That hadn't gone unnoticed by Leanne. As far as she was concerned, that was the only perk of Melissa's pregnancy.

'Okay... then my next question is: what did you put in it? Laxatives?' Leanne sniffed the one remaining mug on the tray.

'Oh for God's sake, just drink the damn drink!' Melissa scolded.

After they'd all settled down to their cocoa, Leanne showed Melissa the crib/cage she thought they should buy.

'I've already decided which one I want,' said Melissa. She flicked through the pages, Leanne watching with dread as the cribs increased in price.
