CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
1And after five days the chief priest Ananias came down, along with some elders and a certain trial lawyer, Tertullus, who briefed the governor against Paul. 2And, when he was called, Tertullus began to make allegations against Paul, saying, âBecause of you we have enjoyed a great deal of peace, and on account of your foresight restorations of order have come to this nation, 3Which we welcome, in everything and everywhere, with all gratitude, most excellent Felix. 4But so as to detain you no further I beseech you, in your forbearance, to grant us a brief hearing. 5For we having found this man pestilential, and provoking insurrections among all the Judaeans throughout the inhabited world, and a ringleader of the heresy of the Nazoreansâ6Who also attempted to desecrate the Temple, and whom we seized [7âBut the chiliarch Lysias arrived in great force and conducted him out of our handsâ], 8From whom, when you have examined him, you will be able to ascertain everything of which we accuse him.â 9And the Judaeans joined in too, asserting that these things were true. 10And, when the governor had signaled him to speak, Paul answered, âKnowing you have been a judge of this nation for many years, I gladly offer my apology for myself. 11You can verify that it is no more than twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem to worship. 12And neither in the Temple, nor in the synagogues, nor anywhere throughout the city did they find me debating or drawing a crowd; 13Nor can they provide you evidence concerning the things they accuse me of. 14But this I confess to you: that, in keeping with the Wayâwhich they call a heresyâso I worship the ancestral God, believing everything in accord with the Law and written in the prophets, 15Keeping hope in God thatâas they themselves anticipateâa resurrection of both the just and the unjust is about to occur. 16In this too I myself strive always to keep a conscience void of offense against God and human beings. 17And after many years I came, bringing along alms to my people and offerings, 18In the course of whichâhaving been purified, and with neither crowd nor commotionâI was discovered in the Temple 19By some Judaeans from Asia, who ought to be present and accuse me before you if they have anything against me. 20Or let these men themselves tell what malfeasance they found when I stood before the Councilâ21Unless it concerns that single protest I cried out as I stood among them: âI am being tried before you today in regard to resurrection of the dead!ââ 22But Felix, who had a fairly accurate knowledge of the Way, put them off, saying, âWhen the chiliarch Lysias comes down I will make my determination on your case.â 23He commanded the centurion to keep him and to allow him license, and to forbid no one among his own acquaintances to attend him. 24And arriving after some days with his wife Drusilla, who was a Judaean woman, Felix sent for Paul and listened to him regarding faith in Jesus the Anointed.
