JACK

My blood runs cold as I watch Chessy’s beaming eyes glowing in my dark bedroom.

“You love me?” she asks, sounding hopeful and happy.

I silently reprimand myself for being such an idiot and letting my big mouth run away from my good sense.

“No…” I say, my voice an octave higher than it should be.

Chessy’s shoulders rise and fall at a rapid rate. Her breathing is accelerated. Her heart is probably racing. “You said you love me.”

“Did I?” I ask, sounding like Ross from Friends when he’s in a tight spot. “Are you sure I didn’t say I loathe you? I mean, if you think about it, love, loathe… They sound very similar.”

Chessy rolls her eyes. “No, you said love.” She gets on all fours and crawls over to give me a kiss, but I shrink back.

“I think we’ve had too much to drink again.”

Panic seeps through my body now as Chessy comes onto me. She climbs into my lap and rolls her hips in a way that would bring any man to his knees. I let out an agonized moan and grip her thighs.

I’m powerless as she rocks in my lap, waking all of my needs and desires.

My head tries to lasso my wildly beating heart with the thought that the only reason she wants to take things further now is because I told her how I feel.

Nothing else has changed. All of the obstacles are still there. It’s just hard to see them right now.

“Hey,” Chessy says, pressing her finger under my chin and lifting my head to look at her. She bends down to plant a soft kiss on my mouth, then she whispers in my ear. “I think I might just feel the same way.”

My chest explodes with joy as she wraps her arms around me. I drag my hands up her back and bury my head in her neck, wrapping her up in a tight hug.

It’s true. I do love her. How can I not?

She’s my sunshine on a rainy day. She’s the sweetest birdsong after the longest night. The gentle breeze on a hot summer’s day.

I think of the way she interacts with Brodie. She bends down to talk at his eye level and softens her voice. Other adults look down on kids and shout.

She’s real and raw and the kindest person I’ve ever known.

Of course, I love Chessy.

That’s not the problem here. The problem is that if Beverly finds out I’m in love with our son’s kindergarten teacher, I don’t know how she’s going to react. Not well, that’s for sure.

“I don’t want to be the reason you lose your job,” I whisper, pulling her arms away from my neck and looking at her again. Chessy frowns. “Then I’ll quit. I can find another school to work for.”

I shake my head, troubled. “We can’t do that to Brodie. What if your replacement is a real jerk?”

Chessy climbs out of my lap and sighs heavily. “You really think we can’t make this work?” she asks, hope fading in her voice.
