Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) are often the top predator in the warm waters they occupy. Older bass often eat fish, but largemouths sometimes prefer a specific food type, sometimes a particular fish species, sometimes crayfish, tadpoles, or frogs. Adult largemouth bass are solitary fish that typically occupy a territory where they hunt from ambush. They also may rove when hunting. The initial hit of a largemouth feeding on surface prey is often like a small explosion. Two other bass, the smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) and the spotted bass (Micropterus punctulatus), favor rivers and reservoirs, respectively.
