LOAD-IN

Load-in to the club is usually scheduled at 4 or 5 PM. You drive to the venue and hope they have put a couple of orange cones out in the street to reserve a parking space for your van or bus as you requested. Then the trailer is unlocked and everyone unloads the gear and rolls it into the club. If the gig is on the second or third floor, you hope for a freight elevator. If there is none you hope for loaders.

If your band has asked the club sound guys to come in early because the band setup is so elaborate, arrive on time or they won’t be happy and won’t help you much. They usually start their day at 4 PM, so a 2 PM load-in is stealing part of their off time. At the end of the night, if they’ve done a good job and the show has gone well, you might tip them twenty to fifty bucks.

Tip from Howard Greynolds, Thrill Jockey Records: “Make it to the club on time and be courteous to the bartender, the soundman, and the promoter, as they will make or break your evening.”
