Though set in Houston, where many of the exteriors were also filmed, this movie is a generic youthful angst picture that could have been set most anywhere in 1990s urban America. In Reality Bites, recent college graduates try to decide what to do with their lives while constantly referring to the brand names they’ve grown up with, such as Big Gulps, Coco Puffs, and the Brady Bunch. Obviously a viewer who also came of age in the nineties will find this group more sympathetic than will some older movie lovers. Ryder’s character must choose between the lackadaisical but oh-so-intelligent Ethan Hawke and the ultra-responsible but rather dull Ben Stiller. After Ryder loses her job with a TV show, Hawke comforts her with a visit to Tranquility Park, a downtown oasis of water fountains and cylindrical structures built to honor the moon landing in the Sea of Tranquility. This couple is also joined by Garofalo and Zahn on a rooftop near Hawke’s home in the Montrose area. Trendy Montrose is definitely the site where these characters would have landed in Houston.
