1017 In climbing roses that flower once a year, cut back shoots that have finished flowering.
This will make room for shoots in the current year that will develop the flowering stems in the following year. Following cutting back, the shoots are distributed over the trellis and attached to it with no gaps.
1018 Remove rose shoots that are overhanging above paths to avoid injury.
Young rose shoots, too, are covered with thorns, and can potentially cause serious injury. Children at play are especially at risk if they are running quickly along the paths.
