HELPING A
DADDY OUT
At this point in your parenting career, you certainly don’t need to be reminded that it takes two to tango. And as you slowly graduate from maxi pads and oversized T-shirts back to the land of the living, you will probably find that your partner has some transitioning to do as well. Granted, he’s already done his fair share of adjustment during your pregnancy. Most likely, he had to cope with all the lovely physical and emotional changes that affected your sex life, whether you had some sort of sexual awakening or didn’t want to be touched by his seven-inch pole. Whether you realize it or not, his patience, fortitude, and overall tolerance have been stretched almost as much as your belly. And even though he may not have to tuck loose belly skin into his underpants, the ups and downs of being the pregnant partner can take its toll and impact what happens in your bedroom later on.
Since you’re functioning on significantly fewer brain cells these days, it can be quite a challenge to find the time to use a separate shampoo and conditioner, let alone discuss the changes you’ve undergone courtesy of the new miniature member of your household. If you’re like most parents out there, your relationship has taken a backseat to the baby, no matter how much you vowed it wouldn’t.
But don’t guilt yourself about losing touch with your partner. You’re only human, after all, and so a few sacrifices on both your parts might be in order. And while toddlers, preschoolers, and even tweens are not necessarily easier than your wee one, their demands on your time are incredibly different.
When it comes down to it, your partner is an adult, for God’s sake. He shouldn’t require as much coddling and attention as your baby.
Even so, life might be inordinately easier if you could give him a set of crib notes and a trusty map to help him make his way through the early months as a new dad and postpartum partner. Unfortunately, you’re not at liberty to take a night off to pen a paraphrased version of what’s going on in your head, or the exact route to your G-spot.
So think of this chapter as a window into your postpartum mind. Take a minute to whip through it with a highlighter pen, and then pop this book in your significant other’s “golf” magazine—you know, the one that he reads for the “interesting articles.” Or leave it in his private reading library (aka the bathroom). It will get him up to snuff on what it’s going to take to light your fire.
THE EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER
Men, if you think pregnancy was a bad amusement park ride, then the postpartum adventure is like a gigantic outof-control roller coaster. And the strength of your stomach will directly determine how you make it through the first few months of parenthood, especially since you’ve got a tiny human being at the helm.
Parenting in the early months brings way too
