Family: Araliaceae

Grows up to: 72 × 72 inches (180 × 180cm)

Ideal for shady indoor or outdoor spots

toxic

easy care rating

Native to Japan, the genus Fatsia derives from the Japanese word for “eight,” in reference to this shrubby plant’s eight leaf lobes. Its large, fanning, hand-shaped leaves thrive in low light conditions, so this is a good plant for shady areas. It also works well as a potted houseplant, planted outdoors—although it can grow quite big—or used as a screening plant for indoor/outdoor areas such as conservatories and patios.

Planting | Plant indoors in a pot large enough to accommodate the root ball. Use a mix of soil-based and ericaceous compost.

Position | Happy in a range of light levels from full shade to bright sun, but prefers filtered light or light shade. Avoid hot, dry environments in winter.

Watering | Water so that the soil is just moist between spring and fall. Reduce in winter. Do not let it dry out completely.

Feeding | Use a half-strength fertilizer every two weeks from spring to fall.

Watch out for: Trim to keep in compact shape; cream umbels can bloom in late summer.
