First Impressions

In Light on C. S. Lewis, Nevill Coghill gave one of the most detailed descriptions of Lewis’s appearance of the many that have been written by those who knew him. Unfortunately, Coghill does not mention the age of Lewis for the description that he gave. He knew Lewis from his undergraduate days until his death. The description fits a mature Lewis but not an old Lewis. Coghill and Lewis would not have as much time together after 1939, so perhaps it fits best at this point in his life:

He was a largish, unathletic-looking man, heavy but not tall, with a roundish, florid face that perspired easily and showed networks of tiny blood-vessels on close inspection; he had a dark flop of hair and rather pouched eyes; those eyes gave life to the face, they were large and brown and unusually expressive. The main effects were of a mild, plain powerfulness, and over all there was a sense of simple masculinity, of a virility absorbed into intellectual life.102

George Watson remembered Lewis as a “short, stocky figure” who looked “less like a wit than a pork butcher of hearty disposition.”103
