SPI communication is initialized when the master configures the clock by setting the frequency. This frequency needs to be less than or equal to the maximum frequency allowed by the slave. The master then pulls the respective slave’s CS pin low. This initializes the slave device, and the master should be configured to wait the designated amount of time required for the slave to generate data or complete the designated task. When the wait period is over, the master issues clock cycles that correlate to data either being transmitted, received, or both simultaneously over the MISO and MOSI signal lines. Data is usually transferred in 8-bit chunks and organized MSB to LSB.
