January winds were whipping through Johnson City and as harsh as they blew, the determination behind Abbyâs intentions blew stronger. She hadnât told even her Aunt about her plans because she knew that this was one time that Aunt Clara would not be supportive.
Leaving the store, she chose to pay a visit and apply for an opening for a housekeeper. She loved children and convinced herself that this would be a great opportunity to get some experience with children before her own child arrived. This was all it took to talk herself into seeking employment while she was with child.
When she arrived at the home of Luke Chrisman, he was taken back that an expecting mother would even think about applying for a position. When he inquired about how soon she was expecting, he outright refused. Abby tried with all her might to convince him that she would qualify and would be an asset, but he saw it quite the opposite.
While he was speaking with her, his children had come inside from playing in the snow, and they were able to have their first encounter with Abby. Without even trying, the children took to her and fell in love. As they watched the young woman climb back into her wagon, their hearts were shattered.
Abby was pulling away, the children begged and pleaded with their father to allow her to stay, and that she would be perfect. Luke began explaining to his children that she would be a high risk for him to take in being pregnant with child and that a woman that wasnât in her condition would make a better choice.
This would not satisfy his children and before she got to the end of the lane, they had talked their father into giving her a chance. Reluctantly, he jumped on his horse and went to the end of the lane to retrieve her. As the children jumped with glee, they waited for her to return with their father.
When he had brought Abby back into his home, he offered her a chair and brought his children to her side. Without saying a word, his youngest daughter Tina, whom they called Tiny; ran into Abbyâs arms, receiving all the hugs a little one could be looking for.
Following Tiny was Josie who was eight years old at the time, and finally Jacob who had just turned thirteen. Each child had circled around Abby, clearly showing that she was its pick. The father couldnât understand it, shook his head and informed Abby that she had the job.
He also followed with clear instructions that when it was time for her to have her child, she must return to town where the Doctor would see to the birth. She agreed just to pacify him, but she had no plans to return to town.
