THE LIGHTS UNDER the canopy of the railer station were particularly harsh in the dim twilight of dawn. With only one sun above the horizon and a thick forest of trees all around the tower, Spc. Qent was quick to voice his thoughts on the island. “This place is eerie. It reminds me of Mater.”

Lazaro walked up and gave him a quick chuck to the shoulder and squinted in humor. “I can’t tell, are you wearing a black uniform, or one of the blue of Security Corp?”

He made a face. “I’m serious here, Laz. You telling me it doesn’t remind you of Mater, even a little?”

“They’re not even the same kind of trees!”

It was Lt. Madlin who settled it. “No, he’s right. While the forest itself is quite different, there is a similarity to Roc Island. It’s the silence.”

“See?” Qent puffed out when the lieutenant agreed with him.

Madlin continued. “It’s as though there is this sense of…waiting. Shouldn’t there be more sounds, like birds and insects? That is what makes it so strange.”

“Do you think it’s safe?” Spc. Penn had just come back from rechecking her communication supplies stocked in the back of the railer seg. They were waiting for the Connate and commander to return from a last meen meeting with the captain.

Laughter met Penn’s hesitant words and they all turned to see Gemeda Shen exit the tower onto the station platform. She had a large duffel over one shoulder and her medican kit in the opposite hand. “Do my ears deceive me? Are Shield Corp guardians seriously debating the safety of an adventurist mission, when literally every other dae of their lives are in peril from the sheer nature of their Corp career?”

Ciera Penn flushed and rubbed the back of her neck. “Well, when you put it like that, my worry seems absurd.”

Olivienne and Castellan had exited in time to hear the communication specialist’s words. “Never fear, Penn! With the incredible and stupendous Doctore Gemeda Shen along, we shall be all good and well.”

Gemeda rolled her eyes and Olivienne laughed along with the other specialists on the platform at their commander’s words. The scene was broken when the railer engine abruptly chuffed to life. Lt. Savon stuck his head out the door of the powerful machine. “Sers, stone and water tanks are loaded and the railer is ready when you are.”

Lt. Madlin confirmed her portion of the checklist as well. “All adventurist gear as well as food and water rations are loaded too. I also took the liberty of having Specialist Lear make enough vellum copies of the Magna map to distribute to the entire team.”

As if by unspoken order, or perhaps through telepathic one, both lieutenants and all the specialists came out of the railer and seg and lined up on the platform in front of Olivienne. As one they saluted the sovereign. Then Castellan took two steps away, turned on her heel, and also saluted Olivienne. “Connate Dracore, this mission is yours to begin.”

Their unwavering dedication
