CHAPTER 20

DRAK

After a long day of meetings, Drak finally had a chance to take the letter his mate had given him to the intergalactic landing bay. He had been told the spaceship returning to Earth planned on leaving just before sundown, so Drak knew he had to hurry.

The landing bay was a giant glittering space that fit nearly a hundred spacecrafts at a time. It had been built for Zata’s intergalactic exploration missions, and later expanded for large trade ships as the connection with the humans had been established.

Drak had spent a lot of time as a child on the balcony that overlooked the landing bay, just watching ships come and go and catching glimpses of Zatan explorers returning from different galaxies and the resources they brought back with them.

In fact, he had often thought that if he were not meant to become king, he would have been perfectly satisfied to live the independent life of an intergalactic pilot. In his youth, he had lobbied for the chance to accompany explorers on intergalactic missions, but those days of exploration and adventure were now over for him.

Though, he reminded himself, now with a mate from Earth – if everything went as planned – perhaps he would have more reason to visit Earth with his mate someday in the future.

Speaking of Earth…

Drak paused on the balcony where he had spent so many hours as a young Zatan. He took the letter out of his robe’s pocket and looked at the envelope. His mate’s messy English handwriting put a smile on his face. The strong yet haphazard strokes matched the human’s personality well.

He wondered who the letter was to. Who did his mate care so much about to write a letter for, more so than anyone else on Earth? The name on the front of the envelope was Silvia Reyes. The surname was the same as his mate’s. If Drak was remembering human naming conventions correctly, was it possible that this human was a relative?

It was custom on Zata as well as on Earth that written correspondence in a sealed envelope was meant to be private. But… Every cell in Drak’s body ached to open the envelope and read what was within. It wasn’t that he distrusted his mate or had any ulterior motive.

He was simply desperate for any way to understand the human better, and he had a feeling that reading this letter would give him at least a glimpse of what made Josh who he was.

Did he have time? Drak glanced down into the landing bay. The massive Zatan cruise ship made specifically for its human travelers was still sitting in its spot. Passengers were still boarding the ship and a few Zatan crew members loitered outside. The spaceship wasn’t going anywhere at least in the next few minutes.

Knowing full well that what he was doing was wrong, Drak gently worked the envelope open without tearing it and began to scan the letter. He had some trouble reading his mate’s handwriting at first – he only had practice in reading typed English – but soon became accustomed to it.
