CHAPTER 17

CADEN

Caden woke up the next morning in the palace infirmary.

Xade had wanted to drop by there the night before, to have Caden’s wounds treated. By the time they had arrived, Caden had been so exhausted he had simply just crashed on one of the beds. So instead of returning to Xade’s quarters, they had spent the night at the infirmary.

The infirmary looked more like a giant hallway lined with beds than an Earth hospital. Several of the beds had been filled the previous night, by palace workers and guards who had been injured in the rebel attack. But this morning, it seemed most of the beds were empty… and Xade was nowhere to be seen.

The head palace doctor, a tall Zatan woman who wore her long hair in a bun, walked over to Caden from another patient she had been talking to. Caden remembered her from the night before. She had been very kind and gentle as she had cleaned his wounds and put on some strange medicinal paste.

“Good morning, Caden,” she said in slightly accented English.

“Good morning.” Caden yawned. “I didn’t sleep in too late, did I?”

“Not at all. Let me take a look at your back.”

Caden sat up and turned so the doctor could reach his back. She moved aside the soft fabric of his infirmary robe and took off the bandages she had applied last night.

“Very good,” she said as she began to put on new bandages. “You won’t need to worry about these wounds after tonight. Take off the bandages before bed and simply make sure to stay clean.”

“I can do that.”

“And don’t forget to stay hydrated and eat something nutritious. Your body went through a lot of stress yesterday.”

“Of course. I think I’m going to go take care of that now,” he said, wondering if the doctor could hear his stomach rumbling. “Where is Xade?”

“Prince Xade had a meeting to attend this morning,” the doctor said, a contemplative expression on her face. “I’m sure he will return once he is finished.”

Caden nodded, feeling slightly disappointed that he wasn’t here. Although Caden was aware that Xade probably had a lot to do after the last day’s attack, he was still a bit sad Xade hadn’t been there by his side when he woke up.

“I think… I think I’ll go look for him. Do you think that’s alright?”

The doctor smiled. “I’m sure that would be fine,” she said. “I would assume he is in the royal meeting hall.”

“Thanks,” Caden said, smiling now as he hopped off the bed. “I… I’ll be going then.”

“Take care,” the doctor said, her expression gentle. “And tell Prince Xade I say hello.”

Caden assured he would. He thanked the doctor once more and walked out the infirmary, looking down the hallway both ways. He tried to remember which way it was to Xade’s quarters… Which way had they come from the night before? He couldn’t remember at all.

And even if he did, hadn’t the doctor said Xade would be in the meeting hall? He had no idea where that was.
