Chapter Nine

A Second Chance

Abel expected death to be cold. He remembered what Lucien told him about it when they were younger. Lucien was a necromancer so he could dip into the world of the dead and mingle with spirits and ask them questions, if he wanted. And he always came out of it covered in ice crystals and shivering.

Back then, Lucien said dead people always wanted to be alive again, and they were particularly grabby about it.

Abel understood the first part. He didn’t want to be dead either, and when Lucien found out what happened, he’d probably blame himself and distantly wish he’d been around to save his poor cousin from such a horrendous fate.

Heh.

Still. What he’d said about death was all wrong.

Abel wasn’t cold.

And death sure as fuck wasn’t supposed to hurt that much. Like his body had been tossed around in a cyclone filled with rocks. The bruises ached all at once. He couldn’t even focus on one pain because it was everywhere.

Every muscle.

Every nerve.

Even the hearts in his chest throbbed with so much hurt he wanted to cry out.

Wait.

Hearts.

In his chest?

That wasn’t supposed to happen, was it?

If he was dead, his connection to Dagz would be severed for good.

But it wasn’t.

Dimly, Abel concentrated on the throbbing. Sure, it felt like a pair of hammers inside his chest. And they kept missing whatever nail they were trying to bang down. But if his heart was beating that meant he was still alive.

Consciousness dripped over him slowly, like candle wax that pressed into his skin and stuck in his hair, leaving him weighed down. He blinked several times before his eyes focused on the darkness above him. Wooden beams danced in smoke. The ground buzzed under him, thick with magic, and the scent of a familiar forest was all he could smell.

Well, besides the smoke and meat and Dagz.

Dagz!

What had he done?

Abel was supposed to be dead.

Instead he was in shifter territory (that accounted for the magic) alive and. . . . and. . . . well, he wasn’t rabid. At least, he didn’t feel rabid. His mind was his own, besides a fog that settled over it since Dagz promised to kill him.

He couldn’t remember anything else. But when he ran his tongue over his teeth they weren’t foamy. He didn’t want to kill anyone besides Arno and his fucking hunters. And the only thing wrong with his mouth was that it felt like it was full of ash.

His stomach grumbled.

With a rustle of movement, Dagz leaned over him with a tin cup filled with water, the omega’s face blurry in the dim light. “Drink,” he said and poured it slowly into Abel’s mouth, propping up the back of Abel’s neck.

Abel swallowed.

Water in shifter lands always tingled on his tongue pleasantly, the magic infused everything around them with an essence that was missing elsewhere. How did he forget about that?

He drank greedily, even though it felt like most of it trickled down his cheeks and stuck in his beard.
