Chapter Fifteen

Holly felt something inside of her that she had not felt in a long time. Special. Briar had just dedicated a song to her and it was the most wonderful feeling in the world. She had grown accustomed to watching Briar perform, and knowing she would not be able to do it any longer made Holly much sadder than she had imagined it would. Earlier when Briar held her hand, Holly wanted to tell her not to let go. That she needed that touch just as much as she knew Briar did. That she didn't want to go to California and work for someone else, but rather stay here.

But it was too late for that. Perhaps it was for the best. There was no longer denying there were feelings starting to grow for Briar. Those feelings could become so much more and the thought excited Holly. But it also brought back those memories of what going down that road would be like.

Holly smiled at Briar as she turned toward her. That sweet, soul-lifting smile that had made Holly feel like she was walking on the clouds. It was something she cherished. But she also knew that if she stayed around, Briar's smile would eventually fade, like all things did in life.

Turning her head sharply, she watched as three of the security guards pulled back two women who were trying to get on stage. This was the last song, with a possible encore, and Holly wished the song would end. The crowd had become unruly. Cups, shoes and even bras were thrown on the stage. Seeing more movement, she saw two men start fighting, their fists going back and forth as two more security guards rushed to stop them. A group made a half circle around a woman and cheered as she took her shirt off. Then on the other side of the crowd, another mob started to push forward.

Holly’s eyes narrowed in on one man who was maybe in his late-twenties. The music wound down, the guitar and drums light, as Briar thanked the crowd for showing up this evening. Yet, the audience acted as if the concert would go on forever. A man pulled another woman up on his shoulders, and the woman pulled her shirt over her head and threw it at the stage. She wore no bra and the men around her tried to grab her and pull her down. Luckily, security was there in no time before something horrible happened.

Then Holly’s heart jumped as the man she spotted moments before quickly got on stage. Her instincts kicked in and she took off, Briar turning toward her, a look of confusion on her face.

“Holly?” Briar said as screams came from the crowd. Apparently she hadn’t seen the man storm the stage, and security was busy trying to control the crowd. Ignoring Briar, Holly moved past her right as the man raised a knife, grabbed his wrist and tackled him to the ground. Moving quickly, all of
