“WE AREN’T SAFE here.”

Stephanie’s head jerked up. “What? You told me that I was safe!”

Rocket shook her head. “You were safe from my team. But now I know this entire affair is nationwide it’s only a matter of time before the bad guys start pooling their resources to bring in the rest of us. I need a base of operations and I need Lingua.”

Amari cocked her head. “I understand your need for a headquarters, but why do you need Lingua specifically?”

Rocket sighed and sat back in her chair. “Because my team doesn’t have anyone who can far sense but other teams do. A Chromodec with telesthesia could easily track me down with just a photo. I need Lingua because she’s the only one I know who can use an eloptic collar to create a buffer field that will prevent Chromodecs from using their powers in its general location.” Zendara raised a pale eyebrow and Romy elaborated. “Human genius. She can speak more than thirty languages and is a hacker and cracker. That woman has forgotten more about computers than I’ll ever learn.”

“And you have one of these eloptic collars?” Amari was curious about the device.

“In my backpack. It’s standard kit for every agent.”

“What can we do to help?” Stephanie’s mind was racing with everything Romy had laid out for them. Part of her felt a twinge of jealousy at the level of admiration in Romy’s voice when she spoke of the other agent, but the logical part knew that any sort of jealousy after two nights of intimacy was irrational.

“I need a place with computer access that’s hidden and out of the way. I also need to find a way to the rendezvous point I set up with Lingua years ago. I told her and Julian that if things ever went south to meet there at noon, every day for a week. And if one of us doesn’t show after the week is up, consider the agent lost.”

Amari frowned. “You think she’ll make it then?”

Romy nodded. “Despite the fact that she’s human, she’s one of the best I’ve ever worked with. If she wasn’t taken back at our headquarters, then she’ll be there.”

“You shouldn’t go out in public! You said it yourself, they’re looking for you everywhere and every camera in the city will be scanning for you.”

Romy leveled a serious gaze at Steph. “I’m going, she won’t trust anyone else.”

“Steph’s right, it’s not safe for you in the city right now. You definitely shouldn’t go without backup.”

The agent snorted. “Who’s going to be my backup, you?”

Amari smiled. “I may not have your strategic mind or combat training, Agent Danes, but I have more power than anyone you’ve ever met and I’ve been learning how to use it for the past eight years. So, yes.”

Zen didn’t like the fact that Amari was going off without her, but she had little to contribute with the situation. She knew nothing about Chicago other than what you could read in the tourist brochures, nor was she familiar with her powers.
