Discussing weddings and marriage with Rosannah was a week ago and that time has gone by faster than I would have liked. I have been quite apprehensive about taking Rosannah to Vladimir and Cindy’s ceremony. She has already expressed horror about it, and she has good reason. No part of a transition is nice to witness. There are three stages in the process. The first is the introduction of vampire blood into the human body. This is a task that has to be done very, very quickly due of the rate in which vampire skin and flesh heals itself. There is not much to see during this part for humans, but vampires can see exactly what is going on.

The second stage is dying. Even though it can take mere minutes, this is by far the most traumatic to witness and frightening to experience. As the vampire blood spreads through the human body, it shuts down organs and bodily systems on its way. When the vampire blood hits the brain, it preserves it so that memories and personality are not lost. It also ensures that the human does not stay dead. This stage then finishes with shutting down the brain.

The third and final stage is the transformation itself. Even though the body is technically dead, the vampire blood is not. It gets hard at work to change the body from human to vampire. The first thing it does is switch the brain back on, so to speak, so you have to experience the full effects without being able to move. It is an incredibly painful and gruelling experience, physically changing every molecule in the body, strengthening and hardening skin, bone, and muscle while shrinking internal organs. This stage can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days. It depends on the age of the vampire the blood comes from. The older the vampire, the faster the change.

Rosannah will be there for two of these stages, and it is bad enough that she views it as murder. There was a time not long ago when I would have delighted in watching Rosannah’s reaction, but now it will not bring me any kind of happiness.

After the transformation is complete, Rosannah will be amazed, and it may just change her overall opinion.

Now I find myself staring at the mirror in my bedroom. I am staring into the eyes of a man who has not aged a day in over two hundred years. Only a shell of the man he once was remains.

“You’re looking very dapper,” Lawrence says popping his head into my room. I feel incredibly sorry for him. Half of him is missing and yet he puts on a brave face. He could hate me, as I helped to drive Nicholas away, but he does not.

“When the occasion calls for it.” I turn to him smiling.

“Are you looking forward to it?” Lawrence asks with a smile.

“Yes,” I say trying to appear enthusiastic.

“You don’t sound too happy about it,” he says walking over to me.
