Hypersensitivity

If you find it harder than most to deal with sensory overload you may be a highly sensitive person (HSP): someone with a heightened response to sensory stimuli. Elke van Hoof, a clinical psychologist who wrote a book on the subject, says that an estimated 15 percent of all Dutch people are HSP. The same goes for people around the world. She describes the phenomenon as follows:

The defining aspect of hypersensitivity is the way an HSP processes sensory information. Because of this heightened response to stimuli, HSPs experience the world around them in a fundamentally different way compared to non-HSPs. Someone who is highly sensitive is very skilled at both observing and thoroughly processing external factors. As a consequence, they are particularly susceptible to overstimulation and intense emotions.

Though HSPs will find it harder than the rest of us to practice niksen, they need it most to stave off overstimulation.
