GET REAL

Between 1095 and 1291, many knights traveled to the Holy Land, modern-day Israel and Palestine, to fight in the Crusades. These were holy wars waged between Christians and Muslims. The Knights Templar were formed to help Christian pilgrims get to Jerusalem. They followed strict rules and gave themselves harsh punishments if they broke them.

Things Don’t

Go According

to Plan

March 11th

We’re sitting on a hill overlooking Froddington Castle now. The sun is setting, and we’re going to wait until tomorrow morning to take back Saint Stephen’s fingers.

Froddington Castle isn’t quite as big as ours, but it looks pretty secure. It has a keep inside a large courtyard surrounded by a curtain wall with six flanking towers. There are overhanging bits on the towers with holes in the bottom, so they can drop stuff on anyone who tries to attack. There’s a gatehouse at the entrance, with a heavy portcullis gate, and the whole castle is surrounded by a deep ditch.

I asked Sir Reginald what his military strategy for taking the castle was if the knights don’t give in to our demands. He said we don’t need one because we’ve got Saint Stephen on our side and he’ll look out for us. He didn’t say how he expects him to do it, but it probably involves him appearing in a cloud and threatening the Froddington lot with bolts of lightning if they don’t give in.

Oh God, we’re all going to die tomorrow, aren’t we?

Never mind. At least I’ll get to find out what it’s like to be a bold knight, even if it’s only for the few seconds from when we ask for the fingers back to when the Froddington knights attack.
