Letter 3

Monday 17th August, Rosings Park

Dear Madam,

I thank you for your letter. I am relieved indeed to know that you are well.

Your assumptions are in part, at least, correct concerning your sister and my friend. It does appear to me most foolish, however, that I must be induced to explain my intervention after so long an interval during which much of far greater import has evolved.

Concerning the Colonel, you may set your mind at ease. I am not ashamed of my actions, therefore his reference to such matters not. I am somewhat surprised that your persistent enquiries did not alert his instinct to your intimate connection, but I fear that is how he can be. Thus, he had no inkling that the woman to whom he referred was your sister, and is therefore most entirely blameless (if a little loose of tongue). Clearly, I had no wish nor intention that this information should reach your ears and thus no desire to cause pain either to yourself or to your family. Yet I do feel that you might yourself have been more immediate frank with the Colonel, and also with myself.

That is all I have to say, except perhaps to answer the charges levied at my integrity that having wilfully caused your sister ‘psychological’ pain I then participated in a – what would one say? – dishonest, perhaps, correspondence with your unwitting self? I have no wish to offend you, truly it pains me so to do, yet I must in all conscience express my bewilderment that you consider your sister to be the recipient of so deep a hurt after so very brief an acquaintance with my friend. I cannot consider myself dishonourable with regard to our communication, because I do not consider my intercession a matter of any great injury or import. Bingley was easily persuaded and all swiftly and most satisfactorily resolved. That is all.
