Chapter 8

The Harvest Festival

The morning of the harvest festival was a whirlwind in the Small’s hut. Robin was absolutely anxious with all the preparations in providing the Sweet Berries, Sweet Berry Jam, and Sweet Berry sauce. She loaded Drew, Rylan, and Rose up with basketfuls of delicious smelling berries an hour before the festival began because she didn’t want to chance being late. Rose wondered how it was possible the group could arrive late to an event being held right outside the door, but she thought it best not to argue with Robin.

As soon as Rose stepped out the door of the tiny hut, arms full of jam jars, she realized Robin was not the only Mavarakite who was anxious about the day’s festivities. The town center was bustling with Mavarakites all preparing for the day in their own way. Rose spotted Max the Warrior along with several other iron-clad warriors sharpening short sticks into knives outside the weaponry hut. Lyla the beautiful sat in a field of wildflowers styling young Wood Dweller’s hair into braided fashions woven with flowers like her own hair. Several other very young Wood Dweller’s—who, according to their beautifully fashioned hair, had already visited with Lyla—were running around the village placing gorgeous flowers in decorative patterns in various places.

With a quick glance around the clearing of the village, Rose noticed many activities had been set up overnight. It reminded her of the fair she had gone to when she was 7 years old with her parents, but without the rides that had been set up. There was an obstacle course that ran directly through the Trusk pen which the creatures lazily walked around. There was a giant crate filled with crispy looking leaves and an engraved wooden sign that said, 'Find the berry in the leaf stack!' Nearby Cecily’s hut was a leaf-fort and a sign that read, 'Glimpse into the future with Talia the Seer!' At the center of the clearing was a long, oval-shaped wooden table and an elderly Wood Dweller who appeared to be rearranging different Mavarkite foods along the table. Robin led the basket-carrying group toward that very wooden table and directed each of them to unload their goods in a certain order along the table.

“Robin, it all looks delicious!” an older Mavarakite appeared behind the group, dropping a plate of bread directly next to Robin’s jam. Even though both Drew and Rylan stood between Rose and the bread, she could still distinctly smell the warmth of freshly baked dough wafting in the air, and her stomach growled.

Rylan, who could apparently hear her stomach, turned to Rose and flashed a twinkling smile at her. “We can eat as soon as Bryce the Leader announces the festivities have begun. Once we finish eating, we should go over to the obstacle course. I want to see if you set a record for all-time slowest completion!”

Rose shot a dirty look at Rylan, and he responded with a kind-hearted laugh that told Rose he was in an exceptionally good mood that day.
