All of this was possible, however, because the school-board’s policy allowed for something outside of the “guidelines.” Schools obviously need to have policies that ensure the safety and respect of all its members. But the policies can allow for other creative options that are life-giving and forward-looking, as the above school has shown. The following chapter explores some of these options.

Models and Applications of Restorative Discipline

In the preceding chapters we discussed principles and values of restorative justice and the importance of creating an overall peaceable and restorative school environment. In this chapter we describe some specific models and applications of restorative discipline in schools. We acknowledge that it is sometimes difficult to separate the model from the application, and we have tried whenever possible to give examples of the models we discuss.
