This morning we all took a walk, in the grayness, noting as we do now the early signs of spring. I point out to the toddler the single, resilient Lenten rose plant in the garden out front, a garden otherwise abandoned by our landlord, nothing else there blooming. There is trash everywhere, plastic bags and cups that have floated in from the apartment building next door, that I keep meaning to pick up. She puts one trembling finger to the dark purple flower, the color of a bruise. I focus on that moment, of her watching the flower. I think that, with this notebook I’m trying to keep, about paying attention to the natural world, I’m trying to come to terms with what Sofia calls the diminishment of the world. The world as it is. An attempt to bring a reverence to things as they are, to perceive the beauty of shabby things, and also the shabbiness of beauty.
