Probably too many of the talks centered on the speaker’s own work and what had been accomplished in his field. As I wrote in the magazine Mountain Life and Work, July 1937, in an article entitled “Retrospect”:

It is amusing now to recall how eagerly we all welcomed an opportunity to talk about ourselves! Sometimes we could hardly sit in our seats to listen to others, for wanting to talk about ourselves! How we watched the clock, and what dark looks we cast at the enthusiastic speaker who overstepped his allotted five or eight minutes!

I used to marvel at John’s patience. He recognized that all this was necessary before we were ready for wider horizons. We had to express ourselves, as it were; and he tried in every way he knew to make the humblest and most remote worker feel that his or her experience was just as important as that of the most prominent in the field. He wanted all to feel welcome and at home.
