One other source of testimony would color the Vatican’s perception. Two pharmacists, who were themselves devout Catholics, made sworn depositions before the Bishop of Foggia that were then forwarded to the Holy Office. They stated that in the summer of 1919, Padre Pio had made two separate requests that he asked be kept secret. The first was for pure carbolic acid, and the second was for a highly toxic substance called veratrine (Luzzatto, 89-94).

In his own deposition for the Holy Office on June 15, 1921, Padre Pio denied ever using carbolic acid for any such purpose. Any secrecy in discussing the request with the pharmacist was because he was asking for the carbolic acid (to be used for sterilizing syringes used on the young men in the Seraphic College) without a doctor’s prescription. A search of his cell revealed no materials that could have been used to create the stigmata. He further explained that the veratrine was intended for mixing with tobacco snuff. He meant to play a prank on the other friars to make them sneeze uncontrollably (Luzzatto, 103), and he did not know of veratrine’s potentially harmful effects.
