The gnostic Gospel of Philip portrays a different tradition, which has come to be important today: “There were three who always walked with the Lord: Mary, his mother, and her sister, and Magdalene, the one who was called his companion. His sister and his mother and his companion were each a Mary.” The first ever biography of the Virgin Mary, church father Maximus the Confessor's the Life of the Virgin, also insists that Mary went with Jesus during his ministry. They were “inseparable”, Maximus tells us, “wherever he went, she accompanied him,” even when she was putting herself at risk by doing so. Mary, he insists, was an authority on Christ's teachings. Although Joseph was too old to take to the road, his sons became disciples of Jesus, and his daughters became disciples of Mary. The image painted is one of Mary leading her son's many female followers, including the highborn Mary Magdalene, the most distinguished female apostle of them all.
