During this time, John continued to be persecuted, now by Doria’s man, Fray Diego Evangelista (not to be confused with Juan Evangelista). Fray Diego was charged with investigating Gracian’s purported crimes, and he also manufactured charges of indiscretion against John, in an attempt to have him expelled from the Discalced Carmelites—rather shocking since he was their founder!

John bore the situation with his usual equanimity: being relieved of most duties allowed him to return to a more fully contemplative life. After only a few months at La Peñuela, however, his health took a turn for the worse, and he traveled to the monastery at Ubeda for treatment. Sadly, he was not well treated there and died at the age of forty-nine on December 14, 1591. As the other friars left for Matins, John said that he was going to sing the Office in heaven.
