Francis and Clare had several clandestine meetings, chaperoned of course, in which they discussed what to do. The eventual result was a plan for Clare to leave the secular world the same way that Francis had done seven years earlier. On Palm Sunday 1212, Clare left the family home with her sister Pacifica. They arrived at Santa Maria degli Angeli during the night and found Francis and the community there praying for them before the candlelit altar. Francis cut Clare's hair and gave her a habit to wear, like that of the brothers but with a veil for female modesty.
