St. Benedict’s foreknowledge also helped him to give good counsel, and his prayers helped to free people from the grasp of the devil. A man was brought to St. Benedict, who had been tormented by an evil spirit. This man was in a clerical state but not a priest or deacon. He had already visited the shrines of the martyrs, but St. Gregory tells us that the martyrs did not heal the man so that God’s work could be seen through St. Benedict. The demon was indeed cast out by St. Benedict’s prayers, but the saint warned the man not to present himself for ordination or the demon would return. For a long time the man followed St. Benedict’s counsel but grew ambitious when he saw younger men being ordained, so he finally accepted ordination. But just as the saint had warned him, the demon returned to torment him, and he never escaped from it.
