I thought, Roy, this is dangerous, they’ll just write you out of the script because it was happening right in front of the whole cast, which is always a dangerous thing to do. But, in fact, I think MacKintosh very sensibly saw how valuable Roy was to the series, appreciated what he was trying to say, and the thing blew over.

It occurred fairly early on, during the second or third episode. I remember it very well because I wasn’t in the first episode. I didn’t know Roy and hadn’t worked with him before and I was really intrigued. It was an artistic matter. … They were discussing a particular scene and Roy took one attitude and Ian took the other, and Roy’s view prevailed.
