CHAPTER 22

The Most Powerful Relic of the Ancient World Makes a Fantastic Back Scratcher

You’ll get no new assignment,” Dunmor stated flatly.

Because his father ran the Board of Dwarven Education, Eagan had been able to get us a meeting the next morning with Dunmor and Borazz Redmantle—the educational director of the BODE.

“Thufir Stonequarry—er, Buck, is the best mentor we have, you must trust me on that,” Borazz insisted over our groans of despair. “Just keep at it, he’ll give in eventually . . . he always does.”

“What do you mean always?” Eagan asked. “I thought this was the first time you’ve trained Dwarven kids in the ancient ways of combat.”

Borazz looked to Dunmor for guidance with his answer. Dunmor considered his words carefully before speaking.

“It’s the first time we’ve trained on this scale,” he said. “But every decade or so, going back thousands of years, each regional Dwarven sect selects a handful of candidates for training. They become a sort of Dwarven National Guard: warriors ready for battle in the case of an unforeseen catastrophe. We call them the Sentry. But anyway, this is how we know Buck’s skill as a trainer. We’re technically not allowed to tell you this since instructor assignment is supposed to be random, but he’s the best trainer we have. You must stick with him. It will be worth it in the end. Now off with you.”

And so we were stuck with Buck and he was stuck with us.
