âMoons of Moonos!â boomed the general. âWhereâs the princeâs Keeper? Blasted scheming mystic! If the farship was in trouble, why didnât she wake us?â
âWeâll probably never know â it appears the keeper was extinguished in the crash,â the doctor replied with a shrug. âThe prince â the un-hatched royal spawn â somehow floated up to the planetâs surface. He hatched outside the farship.â
âGreat suns of Kroakas! Then who kept him alive, if not the Keeper?â the general bellowed.
âWho knows? Only one thing is certain â the prince did not return here until today, when he made contact with the lexicron and woke us from farsleep.â
The general clenched both his fists until they made an unpleasant cracking sound.
âHow longâ¦?â he said through gritted teeth. âHow long have we been asleep?â
âFive kronons,â came the doctorâs reply. âAt least.â
âFive kronons?â cried General Kurg. âBy the Crush! Weâre behind schedule! We must look like a bunch of untrained skirns!â
âIt is quite possible King Kroak hasnât yet checked on our progress,â mused the doctor. âAfter all, he does have nine hundred and ninety-nine other planets to worry aboutâ¦â
âBy the Turmoil! We canât take that risk â if the King does find out, weâll be turned into protein bars! Or worse ⦠weâll be the laughing stock of the empire!â roared the general. âWell, fix it, Doctor! We canât have a brain-stunk prince!â
âIâm afraid itâs not as simple as âfixingâ him, General,â the doctor replied. âThe lexicron has transferred our language to him â but little else. He has not been trained. He doesnât even know who he is. To all intents and purposes, our prince is not a prince.â
âWould you please stop talking about me like Iâm not here?â interrupted Frog. âI so am a prince! Iâve been waiting to be a prince for my whole life! Iâm ready. Iâm readier than ready!â
The general rubbed the top of his bald, green head, blinking his eyes in two directions as he peered at Frog.
âPerhaps the lexicron did get through to you, after all,â he said hopefully. âAll right then â pay attention!â
