‘Why don’t you let Katie bat next, Mr Burke?’ said David.

Mr Burke turned to Katie. ‘Would you like to have a bat, Katie?’ he asked.

Part of her still wanted to run and hide. But another part of her was beginning to have fun.

‘Yes, thank you, Mr Burke,’ she said.

Katie put on the pads. She picked up the bat and took a few practice swings. She stood in front of the stumps. She looked as if she really knew what she was doing.

She was ready. She looked up—and froze. A small group of girls had arrived to watch the trials. She could see Maddie and Samantha. And they both looked as if they couldn’t believe their eyes!
