Mind Switch on the Benefits of Leadership
While this chapter is technically about the ups and downs of leadership, we are definite believers in the simple fact that being a leader is cool, and we think you should go for it! The freedoms that decision-making positions provide are a privilege and allow you to make thoughtful choices in who you work with and how you spend your time. Creating an impact is the role of a leader, but the magnitude of the impact is up to you. You can dial it up or down, fulfill your dreams, or simply hit the set goals. All are valuable, but the ability to choose that path is highly rewarding.
One of your greatest opportunities as a successful leader is to make more leaders. You can mentor. You can coach. You can change lives. And in the process, you will leave a legacy that will reflect your values and your beliefs. On the flip side, leading is a huge responsibility and can be isolating. In the new world of work it will be more demanding than it has ever been. The cocktail of generations and styles that you will interact with every day as your team, peers, and bosses become more diverse will be unlike any you have ever seen. Mistakes will be uncovered and surfaced faster than ever, and wins will be expected, not celebrated, as there is always a disruptive competitor around the corner. But the main reward is still as beautiful as ever: an opportunity to express yourself and build an enduring trail of your professional existence that others carry forward into the future.
