The spring color of flowering trees (top) and the fall foliage (bottom) colors (shown here in Cercis ‘Forest Pansy’) are the signatures of woodland gardens in the region. But flowers fade, while shape and texture remains. If you cover the redbud in both pictures with your hand, you can see how the compelling textures and shapes of the plants present a composition of greens that carries the hillside through the seasons.

This bench is one of several on the approximately one-acre hillside.

At the end of June, after a brief rest the hillside comes alive again with the blooming of the hydrangea collection. I have been surprised by how many hydrangeas will tolerate the dryness of the hillside.
